Network Upgrade for Ubuntu Servers (Recommended)<\/p>\n

1. Install update-manager-core if it is not already installed:
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core<\/p>\n

2. edit \/etc\/update-manager\/release-upgrades and set Prompt=lts
# default behavior for the release upgrader
#<\/p>\n

# default prompting behavior, valid options:
# never – never prompt for a new distribution version
# normal – prompt if a new version of the distribution is available
# lts – prompt only if a LTS version of the distribution is available

3. Launch the upgrade tool:
sudo do-release-upgrade –devel-release<\/p>\n

Follow the on-screen instructions.<\/p>\n

sudo do-release-upgrade –help<\/p>\n

Usage: do-release-upgrade [options]<\/p>\n

Options:
-h, –help show this help message and exit
-d, –devel-release Check if upgrading to the latest devel release is
possible
-p, –proposed Try upgrading to the latest release using the upgrader
from $distro-proposed
-m MODE, –mode=MODE Run in a special upgrade mode. Currently 'desktop' for
regular upgrades of a desktop system and 'server' for
server systems are supported.
-f FRONTEND, –frontend=FRONTEND
Run the specified frontend

Upgrade from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS<\/p>\n

Network Upgrade for Ubuntu Desktops (Recommended)<\/p>\n

You can easily upgrade over the network with the following procedure.   <\/p>\n

Press Alt-F2 and type update-manager –devel-release  
Click the Check button to check for new updates.  
If there are any updates to install, use the Install Updates button to install them, and press Check again after that is complete.  
A message will appear informing you of the availability of the new release.  
Click Upgrade.
